Reminiscing about a warm summer evening over a glass of 2014 La Canosa - Rosso Piceno Superiore DOC Nummaria.
A beautiful, approachable wine composed of a true Italian blend of Montepulciano, a staple of the Abruzzo region, and Sangiovese grapes. Structured and elegant, the wine complements the relaxed and amourous energy of the garden - shadows extend further as dusk sets in and the tone of red, which appeared young and highlighted in the sun, deepens. The scent is muted at first, then opens up to qualities of bark with a mineral, polished tannins, and persistent fruit.
Stepping into the Ellement Wine + Spirits shop you may be greeted by a warm smile from behind the counter or you might even spot a little golden bun popping in and out from behind neatly arranged bottles. This is Taylor Archibald – a familiar face in the culinary and beverage scene in Winnipeg, now busy acting as the General Manager at Ellement Wine + Spirits.
If you happen to catch him at the shop, at a moment when he is not bustling around the city on his motorcycle from restaurant to restaurant – he will not hesitate to share his interest and knowledge of wine, both old and new, in his always casual, articulate, and open way. There is a sense, as you listen, that any slight pretension we often associate with the world of wine is lifted, and you are greeted with a curious story about a time and place – specifically when he is speaking of the relatively new world of naturally-minded wines. Let him guide you through a series of must-try labels and you won't leave with a long list of tasting notes to recall as you experience the bottle on your own. Instead, you will leave with an understanding of a context – a family, the character of a landscape, the temperment of the climate – those are the notes and details that will linger in your mind as you enjoy the bottle.
An Italian heavy-weight is rounding out the summer for us. This bottle offers a beautiful way to ring in the cooler months while fulfilling the hearts of year-round full-bodied red wine drinkers.
This North-Italian Barbera fills the nose with the richness of dark cocoa, coffee, and vanilla. A little bit of a berry note offers bite, together with peppery spices. Velvety tannins and a touch of saltiness make the wine feel very juicy and salivating – like when you bite into a blueberry or other crisp sun-ripened berry. Enjoy!
Solar Das Bouças, Loureiro, 2016
A fruity aroma, especially pear - typical of the Vinho Verde region, Loureiro. Within the mouth, it is dry and cool, with well-balanced acidity and body structure, and offers a brilliant, fresh aftertaste.
